The pond is informal in shape with about 4,800 gallons of water. The depth is 5 feet at the deep end. 4" pipework feeds a vortex from which a Sequence pumps to an Aquadyne bead filter. A Hi-Blow 40 supplies air directly to the pond via air stones. Originally the pond had an 8ft, 4 bay filter with Japanese matting cartridges after the vortex, with pumps pulling water through the filter. However, the filter was difficult to keep clean in the water space below the jap matting, which led to bacterial problems. Half a dozen fish deaths, plus others left with war wounds to show what went on, meant it was time for a change. The Aquadyne has been running since May and appears to be working well.
This year we've constructed a goldfish cum vegetable filter to help to reduce the nitrate levels. It is block and render construction with a water volume of about 800 gallons. Nitrates were previously kept under reasonable control with a separate anaerobic filter tucked into the last bay of the original filter but this had to go when the filter system was changed. Whilst blanket weed has been present this year it has been unsightly rather than a complete pain! Hopefully next year?
